And since her ad made it clear that she wasn't expecting just hand-holding her dates zipped from first base to the full monty in record time. Juska is a totally engaging perceptive writer funny and frank about her exploits. It's high time someone revealed the fact that older single people are as eager for sex and intimacy as their younger counterparts. Jane Juska's brave ... Bridget Jones's Diary (DVD) Hit comedy based on the international best-seller. Single paranoid and nothing like as plump as she thinks she is the last thing Bridget Jones wants is for her mother to try and set her up with some idiot in a reindeer jersey. Perhaps an affair with her boss will help? Renee Zellweger Hugh Grant and Colin Firth star. The Bridget Jones phenomenon was a British literary success long before the likes of Harry Potter based on the series of newspaper columns by Helen Fielding the book's success came as something of a surprise and Bridget an obsessed singleton living in London working in publishing and prefixing each diary entry with her daily alcohol and calorie consumption became an unlikely heroine. The news that Bridget was to be portrayed by Renee Zellweger a Texan and not a Londoner caused a bit of a stir - unfounded of course. After all Brits have been playing American heroes for years so why grumble? Especially given Zellweger's wonderful performance here nailing ever mannerism to a very English Tea. Bridget is a sort of female version of the Hugh Grant characters from Four Weddings and Notting Hill stuttering and insecure. Hugh Grant pops up here too but mercifully plays the cad - something that he has always been good at (see An Awfully Big Adventure) but somewhat unappreciated for. He's excellent here - as is Colin Firth cheekily cast as Bridget's Mr. Darcy (in the book she lusts after Firth in his role as Darcy in Pride & Prejudice) and glowering in all the right places. The film juggles slapstick pithy lines and Jane Austin references with surprising dexterity given it is a directorial debut (of Sharon Maguire - a friend of Fielding and the inspiration for one of the characters in the book). Script duties come from the reliable hands of Richard Four Weddings Curtis and Andrew Pride & Prejudice Davies and the whole film is accompanied by a defiantly retro soundtrack which has led to a worrying revival of eighties fluff. Ah well.
