Biologists Find New Species of African Monkey

Lidia Chinea Martín

A new monkey species has been found in the south of Tanzania, Africa, by a group of researchers from Georgia University and Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania.

The discovery, published by Science Magazine this week, closes a twenty year period without any new species in Africa. The new monkey, “Mangabeye de montaña” was discovered by two research groups, which work independently from one another. Each group found a new population in the same time and in an area of more than 350 Km.

These researchers think that at present there are only 1000 specimens and they are looking at this new species which had been declared extinct by international organisms.

Most monkeys were located in the forest near Rungwe volcano in the Kitulo National Park. Most of them live in the flatland, but some of them have been found over 2000 m high with temperatures below zero.

“The Mangabeye de montaña”, is a medium size ape, has a big tail and brown fur with white spots, it lives in trees. Its face, hands and feet are black ant the adult ones emit a warning sound.
These monkeys live in groups of between 15 or 20 members, nevertheless, though when something scares them, they separate and hide in groups of three members.
