Algunos nombres son incontables tanto en español como en inglés:

El hecho de que estos nombres sean incontables puede llevar a error, porque en ocasiones van precedidos de un número y de un nombre contable:

Se pueden contar las rebanadas, las botellas, los kilogramos y las tazas.
News (las noticias) es un nombre que parece plural, pero de hecho es un nombre incontable en inglés, por ello lleva verbo en singular.
The news is good today.
Debido a que la palabra news en español da idea de plural, es importante recordar que en inglés el verbo que acompaña a news va siempre en singular.
Las noticias son buenas = The news is good (*The news are good)
Hay varios nombres incontables en inglés que pueden ser plurales en español, lo que suele inducir a error a los estudiantes hispano-hablantes:

Los nombres que empiezan con sonido consonántico utilizan a:

Si comienzan con sonido vocálico, llevan an:

Some indica cantidad indeterminada. Se utiliza con nombres contables en plural:
He has some books from the library.
(Tiene algunos libros de la biblioteca)
También se utiliza some con nombres incontables:
There is some sugar in the bowl.
(Hay -algo de- azúcar en el bote)
any
El artículo indefinido any se utiliza en oraciones negativas y en interrogativas tanto en nombres contables como incontables:
There aren't any pens here. (No hay bolígrafos aquí)
Are there any pens here? (¿Hay bolígrafos aquí?)
There isn't any sugar in the bowl. (No hay azúcar en el bote)
Is there any sugar in the bowl? (¿Hay azúcar en el bote?)
There is se utiliza con nombres contables en singular y nombres incontables. Su traducción es "hay".
There is a computer in the living room.
There's some money in my pocket.
There are se utiliza con nombres contables en plural. Su traducción es "hay" también.
There are some posters in my bedroom.
Las formas en pasado son There was (para nombres contables en singular y nombrs incontables) y There were (para nombres contables en plural). ambas se traducen como "había/hubo":
There was some money on the table.
There were some CDs on the chair.
