Its A Wonderful Life - (VHS) You can tell Christmas is on it’s way when Frank Capra’s seminal classic hits the video shelves again. Beginning with residents of Bedford Falls praying for George Bailey (James Stuart). Up in heaven God decides to intervene and before sending Clarence the angel down to earth to assist (and hopefully earn his wings) they recap on Bailey’s life. Bedford Falls is a archetypal American small town replete with a strong community spirit however despite his idyllic surroundings George Bailey is itching to leave. It’s not so easy though and throughout his life fate conspires to keep him in the same town from where he watches his dreams of travel and adventure fall further and further from his grasp. Whether he’s finding romance with Mary Hatch (Donna Reed) or battling against the odious developer Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) he simply cannot leave. It’s no wonder that he’s sick of the place – until of course the angelic Clarence shows him what the town would have been like had he never been born… This is classic fantasy stuff and while it is often considered to be a feel-good film it’s surprisingly bleak until it’s unashamedly sentimental but guaranteed to leave a big stupid grin on even the most cynical of faces. In retrospect it’s quite odd that the film should work quite so well given that it’s messages are seriously mixed up advocating the benefits of small time life by destroying one character’s dreams of leaving. However it does work and with it’s Christmas Card scenery it’s hint of magic and James Stewart being James Stewart it warms the cockles every time. ... Wind In The Willows (DVD) "TOADALLY TERRFIC" Beautifully adapted from the classic childrens novel by Kenneth GrahameThe Wind In The Willows features an all-star cast from the cream of brittsh comedy:including the hilarious adventures of Toad as his rekless fixation with motor cars lands him in jail.Can RattyMole and Badger save himself and help him to escape prisn in time to save Toad Hall from the Wily Weasels? ... Voyageur Michael Cretu aka Enigma releases his fifth studio album. Once again it is filled with the kind of chill out tunes for which he is known. ... Licence To Kill (DVD) - (WS) This time it's personal! James' old mate Felix tangles with a Colombian drug lord forcing James to become a fugitive to extract revenge. Bond's 'license to kill' is revoked to prevent him doing anything stupid - not that it stops our man. Explosive action on DVD. ... Lovely Bones Susie Salmon murdered at the age of 14 watches from heaven as her friends and siblings grow up and do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But then she finds that life is not quite finished with her yet. ...
