Two snipers in Stalingrad one Russian one German embark on a deadly game of cat and mouse. Jude Law Ed Harris and Joseph Fiennes star. Based on true events during the Battle of Stalingrad Jean Jacques Annaud's war epic Enemy At The Gates is a stirring finely made drama. Rather than taking in the whole of the battle it concerns the duel between a pair of snipers one Russian (Jude Law) and one German (Ed Harris). Law's character Vassili Zaitsev is given hero status by his friend and colleague Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) which only adds to the pressure. Although all of the Russian characters seem to be Londoners (no attempts at 'Allo 'Allo accents here which is something of a relief) but when you get used to it it works well. The performances are - in fact - excellent although some of the characters particularly Rachel Weisz' thankless love interest seem slightly superfluous. Visually the film is impressive capturing a war torn city with grim élan. Annaud cranks up the tension during the scenes in which the two snipers face off and the results are extraordinarily nerve wracking. Opening out the film with the other characters the film begins to loose it's way but there are's enough going on here to put it high above the sentimental histrionics of Pearl Harbor when comparing recent war movies. ...
