Charles Messier (1730 - 1817) era una astrónomo que se dedicaba a la "caza" de cometas. Mientras desarrollaba esta actividad, se encontraba con una serie de objetos no estelares que se podían confundir con cometas. Para evitar este problema, elaboró en el 1784 un catálogo de objetos "indeseables" que curiosamente le dieron fama mundial. Independientemente de su famoso catálogo de 110 objetos, Messier llegó a descubrir 21 cometas y se convirtió en el astrónomo más popular de Francia. Fué miembro de la Real Academia de Ciencias de París. Sin embargo, con la llegada de la Revolución la Academia cerró y se tuvo que ir de París en 1793. Murió en el año 1817 a la edad de 87 años.
