Holmes built a castle of horrors in upscale Englewood, Illinois, just south of Chicago. Holmes had repeatedly changed builders, to ensure that no one truly understood the design of what he had created; secret hallways and closets, Soundproof rooms, doors that could only be locked from the outside, sliding panels, stairs that led nowhere and doors that opened to nothing, a basement containing an acid tank, a dissecting table...and a crematorium. He opened it as a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 that celebrated the anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. Unfortunately though, the list of those gone missing at th end of the fair was extensive... Over the years the number of Holmes' victims has typically been estimated between 20 to 100, and even as high as 200. He was arrested in 1985 and put on trial which was one of the most sensational of the century. He was hanged the next year.
