| Professional history |
One of four children in a tennis-playing family, who began to play at age
11. His career started at the hands of 'Pato' Alvarez and with the help of Pedro
Muńoz. He did not turn professional until age 18, having studied first. Later he started
travelling and practising with his elder brother, 'Pepo'. He won his first match in an ATP
tournament in November 1988 in Buenos Aires, defeating Garetta. In 1990 he set a record by
winning the Hilversum tournament as "lucky loser", something only 5 players have
achieved. This was his first title on the ATP Tour. Since then he has been in the Top-50
for nine out of the last ten years. At times he complained of being the "ugly
duckling" (Pato means duck in Spanish!) of Spanish tennis whose results were not
valued enough and who was always left out of the Davis Cup. He did not make his Davis Cup
debut until 1999. Also in 1999 he won his first National Masters title in his fifth final.
Has been working with Bébé Perez since March 2000. |
| Clubs |
For many years he played Bundesliga in Germany for the Rochusclub
Düsseldorf. He is also under contract with Club de Tenis Chamartín, Madrid. |
| Personal |
To keep fit he goes running, swimming, mountain biking and of course
he works out in the gym. As a youngster admired Bjorn Borg. Favourite tournament is Roland
Garros. Other sports he enjoys include football, basketball, horse-riding and golf. In
basketball he supports Real Madrid, in football his favourite club is Atletico
Madrid. Likes to watch science fiction and action movies. Also enjoys listening to music
(Rolling Stones are favorite). Closest friends on the Tour were Alex Corretja and Carlos
Moyŕ. |
