Welcome to the ZOEA NEWSLETTER Home page
ZOEA is a Newsletter intended for all workers interested in crustacean larval development. ZOEA is a newsletter rather than a scientific journal. Publication started in January 1994. Since this moment, more than 1000 issue copies have been distributed worldwide.
ZOEA includes primarily announcements, lists of recent publications, posters, and orals presentations in meetings, abstracts of doctoral theses, and a research directory.
ZOEA will hopefully serve as both a platform for fruitful discussion and exchange of ideas among carcinologists interested in aspects of larval development, as Klaus Anger proposed in ZOEA's inaugural issue, and a clearing house of information regarding both research and researchers.
At present, most members of ZOEA are working on decapod larvae (61 %), followed by those studying larval copepods (8.4 %), other zooplankton (5.2 %), cirriped larvae (3 %), mysids (1 %), and miscellaneous (20 %). Geographically, they are distributed as follows: Europe (38 %), Asia (29 %), North-America (21 %), South-America (11 %), Oceania (4%) and Africa (3 %). As you can see, it would be desirable that the ZOEA Newsletter arrives to a wider range of specialists interested in the larval biology of different crustacean groups. So, it may be a good idea to make ZOEA known to other colleagues and promote the creation of a major forum for the various aspects of larval development in crustaceans. ZOEA has a very broad scope with respect to taxonomy (including all Crustacea), geography (worldwide) and regarding biological disciplines.
The main goal of ZOEA has been, and will be, to help keeping in touch within the crustacean larvologist community and to spread information, especially during the periods between meetings, on recent publications and theses, announcements of events, and updated directories of colleagues working on crustacean larvae. ZOEA was spawned, as an idea, during the First European Crustacean Conference in Paris (September 1992), and it hatched as a newsletter in January 1994. Here we announced the 1st and the 2nd Crustacean Larval Conference (hosted by the 2nd European Crustacean Conference, Liege 1996, and the VII Colloquium Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea, Lisbon 1999, respectively). Recently we announced also the last meeting, that was held at the V International Crustacean Conference (ICC-5) in July 2001 in Melbourne. Although ZOEA is devoted to all crustacean larvae, it still seems to focus on Decapoda. The recent ICC-5 was a good opportunity to introduce ZOEA to colleagues working on other groups of crustaceans, further broadening the scope of our newsletter.
We are now starting a new phase in the development of our ZOEA Newsletter. Since May 2001, ZOEA is posted as a free access page in the Internet, and we are updating this page with high periodicity. Your support, contributions, and ideas, are always welcome!! For further information, please don't hesitate to contact one of the editors.
